Bathtub Replacement in Columbia, MD

Refinishing buys a few years on a tub that is only cosmetically tired. Once the problem is structural or the water is getting past the tub, a new one is the cheaper answer.

Watch for a floor that flexes when you step into the tub. That usually means water has been wicking into the subfloor at the apron for a while. Rust stains under the overflow plate and a drain that runs slow no matter what you pour in it point the same direction. Chips down to the steel or the fiberglass mat will keep rusting and spreading. Spider cracks in the tub floor mean the base was never supported properly. A brown ring on the first floor ceiling under a second floor bathroom is the clearest sign of all, and it does not get better on its own.

Tile is the honest part of this conversation: a tub cannot come out without the bottom two courses of tile coming with it, so we build a new surround on new backer board instead, which is why our tub jobs come out looking finished. With the alcove open we check the framing and subfloor, reset the drain and overflow, and shim the ledger so the new tub sits dead level, with a mortar bed under the base to stop hollow flex underfoot.
