The Honest Schedule for a New Shower
A tiled shower replacement takes four to seven working days on site. An acrylic surround takes one to two. Frameless glass adds another one to two weeks after the tile is finished.

What Happens Each Day of a Shower Remodel?
This is a standard tiled shower in the same footprint, with no layout change.
Day one: demolition
The old tub or shower comes out, tile and backer board come off, and the framing gets checked. Anything rotted or out of plumb is found today, not later.
Days two and three: plumbing rough and blocking
New valve body, drain and any blocking behind the walls for grab bars or a bench. If your county inspects rough-in, walls stay open until it passes.
Days three and four: backer board and waterproofing
Cement board goes up, then the waterproofing membrane, corners, curb and pan. Many crews flood test the pan overnight before tile goes on, which is worth the day. The Tile Council of North America says the membrane has to cover the backing under the entire tiled area.
Days five through seven: tile setting
Walls, floor, niche, curb and trim pieces. Large format tile and herringbone patterns take longer than a straight running bond, so the layout you choose sets this window.
Days seven and eight: grout, seal and cure
Grout goes in, gets cleaned, then cures. Water should stay off the new shower for a day or two even though it looks finished.
Final day: fixtures and walkthrough
Trim, shower head, hand shower, door hardware and caulk go on, then a punch list walkthrough.
What Makes a Shower Remodel Take Longer?
Four things account for nearly every schedule slip. Broader remodeling timeline data compiled by Angi shows the same pattern across full bathrooms, where permits, custom materials and poor trade scheduling are the leading causes of delay.
Frameless glass lead time
Templating happens after the tile is set. Fabrication and installation follow, usually one to two weeks later. A framed door bought off the shelf skips this entirely.
Moving the drain
A shower drain that has to move means opening the floor, cutting the old line and setting new pipe at the right fall. That adds days and usually an inspection.
Tile that arrives late or short
Ordering ten percent extra for cuts and breakage is standard. Running short mid-job means waiting on a second order, and dye lots rarely match.
Hidden damage behind the old walls
Rotted studs or a soft subfloor get repaired before waterproofing goes in. It is usually a day, but it is always unplanned.
Waiting on an inspection
If the valve or drain changed, a rough-in inspection has to pass before the walls close. Inspectors work on their own calendar, so a job can sit for a day or two with open walls through no fault of the crew.
Stacking too many trades
A plumber, a tile setter and a glass installer all need the bathroom to themselves. A schedule that sends them in the right order finishes days faster than one that has crews waiting on each other in a hallway.

How to Plan Around the Downtime
If this is your only shower, plan on roughly a week without it, plus the glass wait if you go frameless. A framed door installed on the last tile day removes that gap entirely.

Shower Remodel Timeline Questions
Can a shower be remodeled in one day?
Only with an acrylic or fiberglass surround over a sound wall, and even then two days is more realistic once demolition and disposal are counted. Any tiled shower needs waterproofing, setting, grouting and cure time that cannot be compressed into a day.
How long before you can use a new tiled shower?
Plan on twenty four to forty eight hours after grouting before running water, and a bit longer if a sealer is applied. Using it early can pull grout out of the joints and leave a haze on the tile that is hard to correct.
Why does shower glass take so long?
It is custom made for your opening and cannot be measured until the tile is set and grouted. Fabrication and installation usually take one to two weeks after templating.
