What a New Tub Really Costs Installed

What Does a Bathtub Cost by Type?
Material sets the base price, the weight, and how much labor the install takes.
Acrylic or fiberglass alcove tub: $1,200 to $3,500
Light, warm to the touch and the easiest to install. Two people can carry one. This is the tub in most homes built after the nineteen eighties and the cheapest to swap.
Porcelain enameled steel tub: $2,000 to $4,500
A harder, more scratch resistant surface than acrylic at a modest step up in price. Heavier, but still a standard alcove install.
Cast iron alcove tub: $2,500 to $6,000
The most durable option and the heaviest by a wide margin. It often needs extra hands and sometimes floor reinforcement, which shows up as labor, not material.
Freestanding soaking tub: $3,000 to $7,500
Beautiful and almost always more work. Supply lines usually have to be rerouted through the floor or a wall, and a floor mounted filler is its own line item.
Walk-in tub with a door and seat: $6,000 to $15,000
Built for accessibility, with a sealed door, a seat and often jets. It needs a dedicated electrical circuit and a larger drain to empty quickly.
What Adds to a Bathtub Replacement Quote?
Cost data compiled by HomeGuide and other pricing services shows the same pattern we see in the field. The tub is the predictable part. Everything around it is where quotes separate.
The wall surround
A three piece acrylic surround is fast and cheap. Tile means cement board, waterproofing and several days of skilled labor. The same tub can carry two very different totals depending on this choice.
Valve and trim
Old two-handle valves cannot accept modern single-handle trim, and many are not pressure balanced. Replacing the valve means opening the wall behind it, which is cheap now and expensive later.
Hidden damage
Failed caulk at the tub edge lets water into the framing for years. Rotted subfloor or studs get repaired before the new tub is set. This is the most common change order on the job.
Removal and disposal
A cast iron tub often has to be broken up inside the bathroom to get it out. That is labor plus dumpster cost, and it belongs on the estimate, not in a surprise invoice.
Access to the bathroom
A second floor bathroom at the top of a narrow staircase adds real hours to both removal and delivery. Some tubs will not make the turn at all, which is why crews measure the path before they order.
Drain and overflow
A new tub almost always gets a new drain and overflow assembly, since the old one rarely lines up or seals correctly. It is a small part with a real labor cost, because reaching it means access from below or through the wall.

Bathtub Replacement Questions
How long does it take to replace a bathtub?
Two to four working days for a standard alcove swap with an acrylic surround. Tile adds three to five more days because of setting, grouting and cure time. A freestanding tub with rerouted supply lines lands in the same range as tile.
Can I replace a bathtub without replacing the tile?
Rarely with a good result. Removing a tub breaks the tile along the bottom two or three rows, and matching discontinued tile almost never works. Budget for the surround as part of the job.
Is a cast iron tub worth the extra cost?
It is if you take real baths. Cast iron holds heat far longer than acrylic and resists scratches from cleaning.
