Refinishing buys a few years on a tub that is structurally sound. These five signs mean the tub itself is finished and a coating will only hide the problem.

Soft or Springy Floor Around the Tub. If the floor flexes when you step next to the tub, water has been getting under it. That is a subfloor problem, and no refinish will fix it.

Cracks in the Tub Floor. Hairline cracks in a fiberglass or acrylic tub spread every time weight goes in. Water passes straight through them into the framing below.

Rust Around the Drain or Overflow. Rust on a steel tub means the porcelain layer is gone. Once the metal is exposed, the corrosion keeps moving under the surface.
