The Bathroom Feels Cramped. A clear glass panel where a curtain and a tub wall used to be opens up the sight line across the room. The footprint does not change, but the room reads much larger.
You Have a Second Bathroom With a Tub. If another full bathroom keeps a tub, converting this one costs nothing in resale appeal. When a house has only one full bathroom, we usually recommend a tub and shower combination instead.
How the Conversion Works, Day by Day
Most conversions take five to eight working days on site. The order rarely changes, because each stage has to cure or pass a check before the next one starts.
Days One and Two. The tub and surround come out and the wall cavity gets opened. We look at the framing, the drain line, and the subfloor, then send you photos of anything unexpected before we build.
Days Two and Three. The drain moves from the end of the alcove to the shower location and gets re-pitched. Framing goes in for the curb, the bench, and the niche, plus blocking behind the wall for grab bars and glass.
Days Three and Four. The pan and walls get a bonded waterproof membrane, then a flood test. Nothing gets tiled until that test holds.
Days Four Through Six. Tile goes up, grout goes in, and sealant closes the corners. Glass is measured on site once the tile is finished, and the custom panel typically arrives one to two weeks later.
Building the Shower for Long-Term Access
Many of our Pasadena conversions are for homeowners who plan to stay in the house. A few choices made during framing keep the shower usable for decades without making it look like a hospital fixture.
A Low Curb or No Curb at All. A two inch curb is easy to step over and still holds water well. A curbless entry is possible when the joists allow us to recess the pan, and we check that on the first visit.

A Bench That Is Sized Right. A built-in bench at 17 to 19 inches high works for most adults and doubles as a place to set a leg while shaving. We build it into the framing so it is fully waterproofed.
A Handheld on a Slide Bar. A handheld sprayer lets a seated user rinse without standing. It also makes cleaning the shower itself far easier.
Lighting and floor tile matter here too. A recessed light over the shower and a small format floor tile with plenty of grout lines give better visibility and better grip than a single ceiling fixture over polished stone.
What Moves the Price of a Conversion Up or Down
We price every conversion after seeing the bathroom, because two rooms that look the same from the doorway can hide very different conditions. These are the factors that move the number.
How Far the Drain Moves. Keeping the drain near its original spot is the cheapest path. Centering it under a larger shower means opening the floor and re-pitching the line.
Tile Size and Layout. Large format porcelain covers wall area fast and keeps labor down. Mosaic, herringbone, and stacked patterns take longer to set and cost more to install.
Glass Choice. A framed door is the budget option. Frameless panels use thicker tempered glass and custom hardware, which adds material and lead time.
What Is Behind the Wall. Rotted studs, a failed subfloor, or old galvanized supply lines all add work. We flag these with photos before touching them, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Two houses on the same street in Green Haven can price very differently for the same shower. The one with a cast iron waste line and a soft subfloor takes an extra day of repair before any tile can go on.
